BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) held an Open Session to commemorate the 105th Anniversary of Engineering Higher Education in Indonesia (PTTI) at the West Hall of ITB’s Ganesha Campus on Thursday (3/7/2025). Celebrating its 105th year in 2025, ITB stands as the oldest engineering university in Indonesia, originating from the establishment of the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng on July 3, 1920.

In his address, ITB Rector Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., urged the academic community to view history not only as a reference but also as a foundation for future progress. He emphasized that amid the rapid advancement of knowledge, universities must be adaptable to remain relevant.

"Science and technology no longer evolve over decades, or even years—they develop in days and hours. The future demands well-rounded scholars, those who are not only intellectually capable but also morally grounded and guided by noble values," he stated.

The Rector also outlined the university’s role in the next century as a hub of globally collaborative innovation, cutting across disciplines, cultures, and borders.

"We must be bold and imaginative enough to redesign the university so that it continues to bring meaningful contributions to humanity and the world," he added.

On this occasion, the Rector also announced plans to establish an ITB Museum, envisioned as a space to preserve the university’s historical journey and inspire future generations.

Meanwhile, Chair of ITB’s Board of Trustees (Majelis Wali Amanat or MWA), Budi Gunadi Sadikin—through remarks delivered by MWA Executive Secretary Prof. Dr. Irawati, M.S.—highlighted that ITB has produced numerous national figures, including presidents, ministers, and innovators across sectors. However, he reminded that the challenges ahead require ITB to remain a center of solutions, inspiration, and service to society.

"There are three key elements we must uphold: the relevance of engineering education to future needs, collaboration and innovation that translate into industry and public policy, and the development of technocrats who are also statesmen," he said.

Chair of the ITB Academic Senate, Prof. Edy Tri Baskoro, in his address, underscored the increasingly complex global challenges, including geopolitical conflicts that directly impact national economic and political stability. In this context, he said, engineering universities hold a strategic role in building national resilience through science- and technology-based innovation.

"Innovation is no longer optional—it is a strategic necessity for Indonesia to withstand global uncertainties. Engineering universities must serve as centers for strategic research and talent development," said Prof. Edy.

He also stressed the importance of a strong scientific culture, increased support for science and engineering, and strategies to attract the younger generation to pursue careers in technology.

The event also featured a keynote scientific address by Prof. Dr. Ir. Mohammad Nuh, DEA., former Indonesian Minister of National Education (2009–2014) and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS). His lecture was titled “Higher Education Strategies Towards Self-Reliance and Impactful Innovation.â€

As part of the celebration, ITB presented 34 awards to individuals and institutions recognized for their contributions to the advancement of science, technology, and the strengthening of engineering higher education in Indonesia.

The awards were presented across six categories, namely Ganesa Widya Jasa Adiutama, Ganesa Widya Jasa Utama, Ganesa Widya Jasa, Ganesa Wirya Jasa Adiutama, Ganesa Wirya Jasa Utama, and Ganesa Wira Adiutama.

These awards reflect ITB’s appreciation for the dedication, contributions, and service of distinguished individuals and strategic partners in supporting the development of engineering higher education in Indonesia.
