BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Institut Teknologi Bandung held a dialogue on strengthening the excellence of its Academic Groups (Kelompok Keahlian/Keilmuan, KK) at CRCS, ITB Ganesha Campus, on Wednesday (26/11/2025). The event was attended by KK chairs and ITB leadership. Enhancing the role of KK is a crucial part of ITB’s institutional transformation to increase the university’s contribution to national development and Indonesia’s position at the global level.
The Rector of ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., emphasized the critical role of ITB in navigating an increasingly challenging global landscape. He stated that the success of long-term development is determined not merely by natural resources, but primarily by the quality of human capital. Through this initiative, ITB encourages its Academic Groups to become the frontliners of research, innovation, and scientific advancement capable of delivering strategic contributions aligned with national needs and global dynamics.
“ITB must be able to contribute significantly as a leader, pioneer, driver, and provider of solutions to national and global challenges, particularly in information and communication technology, transportation and energy engineering, infrastructure and disaster management, as well as food and health,” said Prof. Tata.
During the event, Prof. Tata noted that KK at ITB are expected to produce innovative and relevant research, develop applicable technology-based products, and form multidisciplinary collaborations across Academic Groups and across faculties/schools. ITB also encourages KK to improve the quality of international publications and expand strategic partnerships with industry, government, and global institutions. This initiative is part of ITB’s efforts to achieve its target of reaching the top 150 universities in the world.
Based on the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, twelve subject areas at ITB have secured the first national position, including:
• Architecture/Built Environment
• Art & Design
• Materials Science
• Engineering – Chemical
• Engineering – Electrical & Electronic
• Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing
• Engineering – Petroleum
• Chemistry
• Mathematics
• Physics & Astronomy
• Environmental Sciences
• Engineering – Mineral & Mining
However, ITB recognizes that these achievements must continue to be strengthened to improve its international standing.
To further enhance its national and global impact, the Rector also highlighted several ongoing strategic initiatives at ITB, including the transformation of postgraduate programs to boost research outcomes, restructuring research funding mechanisms, strengthening a world-class research and innovation ecosystem, developing Asian research excellence centers, and expanding international collaboration programs. All these efforts rely on the strength of KK, which serve as the core engines of scientific development, innovation, collaboration, and technology downstreaming that directly supports Indonesia’s competitiveness.
