Department of Oceanography ITB Holds Handover Ceremony of Spectrophotometer and Workshop as Part of PKKB 2025

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The Oceanography Study Program of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) held a handover ceremony for the procurement of laboratory equipment for Biological Oceanography in the form of a spectrophotometer, along with a collaborative workshop with PT. Trimas Utama Scientific. The event, which took place in a hybrid format at ITB Cirebon Campus on Wednesday (September 1, 2025), was attended by Oceanography lecturers—Dr.Eng. Faruq Khadami, Dr. Iwan Pramesti Anwar, S.Si., M.Si., Saat Mubarrok, Ph.D., and Dayu Wiyati Purnaningtyas, Ph.D.—as well as laboratory staff and students of the ITB Oceanography Study Program.

This workshop is part of the 2025 Impactful Campus Competency Program (PKKB). In his remarks, Dr.Eng. Faruq Khadami, as the head coordinator of PKKB, stated, “We hope that the procurement of this equipment and the workshop will enhance the capacity of lecturers and support the learning process in the Oceanography Study Program. We also hope that the students in attendance can gain as much knowledge as possible from the speakers.”

The event began with a workshop on the use of spectrophotometers in the industrial field, delivered by Aang Triangga from PT. Trimas Utama Scientific. In his presentation, Aang explained the working principle of spectrophotometry: light is directed into a cuvette containing a sample. As the light passes through the sample, part of it is absorbed, reducing the intensity of the outgoing light. This difference between the incoming and outgoing light intensity is what is used to determine the absorbance level of the sample.

In the industrial sector, spectrophotometers have a wide range of applications, from the food and beverage, paper, plastic, and pharmaceutical industries to environmental quality monitoring and the paint industry. Meanwhile, in the field of oceanography, spectrophotometry is generally used to monitor seawater quality.

“Up to now, the Oceanography Study Program has been using spectrophotometry in learning activities, for example in practical sessions to detect phosphate, nitrate, and nitrite content in seawater,” said Dayu Wiyati Purnaningtyas, Ph.D., a lecturer at the ITB Oceanography Study Program.

The event continued with a presentation on the use of spectrophotometry by the distributor team, followed by training and equipment testing at the Biological Oceanography Laboratory, ITB Cirebon Campus. On the same occasion, basic diving equipment and a UV-Vis spectrophotometer were also handed over to the laboratory.

Through this activity, the ITB Oceanography Study Program not only enhances the quality of lecturers and learning facilities but also expands opportunities for collaboration with industry as part of the 2025 Impactful Campus Competency Program (PKKB).
