BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Two Institut Teknologi Bandung students, Erlangga Abyantara (Urban and Regional Planning, 2020) and Mikail Kaysan Leksmana (Urban and Regional Planning, 2022), won 1st place in "The Netherlands - Asia Pacific Student Short-Video Competition for Climate and Sustainable Development in Cities.
The competition, held by Wubbo Ockels School for Energy and Climate, University of Groningen, encouraged university students from diverse academic fields in the Asia Pacific region to present their academic research in the form of a 2 to 2.5 minute short video, addressing the challenges of climate change and sustainable development in urban areas.

Their work, titled "15 Minute City, New Urban Centers in Bandung, Indonesia", highlights the development of a sustainable urban concept that is environmentally friendly and easily accessible to its residents. Through research and spatial data visualization, Erlangga and Kaysan proposed a polycentric structure to address issues such as traffic congestion, air pollution, and the decline in environmental quality that often occur in Bandung.
“With the ‘15 Minute City’ concept, we wanted to minimize people’s reliance on using personal vehicles and ensure that all of their basic needs can be accessed within 15 minutes from where they live,” stated Kaysan.
During the making of the video, the main challenges they both faced revolved around simplifying an extensive research process into a concise narration while still effectively conveying the core of their study. “The making of this video started with synthesizing our thesis into a clear video storyline. We then created the storyboard, recorded clips, and did some editing,” said Erlangga.
Through a combination of captivating narration and visuals, they proposed a video concept that was easy to understand. Not only did this project successfully convey a clear message about sustainable solutions for urban planning, but it also demonstrated the importance of collaboration and coordination in communicating academic ideas creatively.
"The process required solid collaboration and coordination. We had to ensure that each element of the video supported a clear understanding of the 15 Minute City without compromising the substance of the research,” added Erlangga.
The success of these two students on the international stage not only marked a significant academic achievement but also served as an inspiration for younger generations to take an active role in tackling climate change through research-based innovation and collaboration.
