Bandung City Government and ITB Join Forces to Enhance Sustainable Water and Climate Resilience

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The Bandung City Government and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) have strengthened their synergy in promoting climate resilience and sustainable water management through the signing of a Joint Commitment Declaration for the Bandung Initiative for Water Conservation and Resilience. The event took place during the Asia Africa City Network 2025 Symposium on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, at the West Hall, ITB Ganesha Campus.

This declaration marks an important moment for a combined commitment in developing a city that is resilient towards climate change based on innovation, research, and multi-stakeholder collaboration.

The signing involved key figures from various sectors with strategic roles in development and sustainable water governance, including the Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan; Acting Rector and Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Irwan Meilano, S.T., M.Si.; Special Advisor to the Minister of Water Resources and International Cooperation, Dr. Ir. Arie Setiadi Moerwanto, M.Sc.; and Director of PT Moya Tangerang, Yuni Supriyanto.

Prof. Dr. Irwan Meilano, in his capacity as Acting Rector and Vice Rector for Academic and Student Affairs, signed the declaration on behalf of ITB.

The declaration outlines six core commitments. First, all parties agree to enhance collaborative actions in addressing urban and regional water challenges through comprehensive activities in research, policy-making, education, advocacy, and community empowerment.

Second, Bandung will be developed as a Center of Excellence for water and climate resilience. The city will be a hub for knowledge exchange, joint technology development, and dissemination of best practices in sustainable water management.

Third, this declaration underscores the crucial role of youth and communities. They will be encouraged to become agents of change through leadership, social innovation, and community-based approaches that support urban climate resilience.


Fourth, the parties will promote the mobilization of technical, financial, and institutional resources to accelerate the implementation of large-scale and impactful water resilience programs. Innovation in climate adaptation technology will serve as a key pillar.

Fifth, strengthening policy dialogue and reforming water governance are also prioritized. This effort includes harmonizing local, national, and regional policies through evidence-based, participatory, and inclusive approaches.

Lastly, the declaration emphasized the importance of raising public literacy about water. Through intergenerational educational campaigns, the public is expected to be more aware, involved, and responsible for the protection and management of water resources.

his collaboration between ITB and the Bandung City Government is expected to become a model for academic partnerships with the government in addressing the challenges of climate change and water crises in the future.
