ICISS 2025 International Conference at ITB Becomes a Global Collaboration Platform for the Future of AI in Indonesia

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The annual international conference, The 12th International Conference on ICT for Smart Society (ICISS) 2025, officially opened at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) on Wednesday, September 3, 2025. The two-day conference, held on September 3-4, 2025, carries the theme "Global Perspectives on AI & Technology Innovation." Organized by the ITB Information Technology Expertise Group, the event serves as a strategic platform for researchers, industry practitioners, and policymakers to exchange ideas about the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in a hybrid format.

This year's conference has garnered tremendous enthusiasm from the research community, with 261 research papers accepted out of 351 total submissions.

The event was opened with remarks from the Director of the Smart City and Community Innovation Center (SCCIC) at ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Suhono Harso Supangkat, M.Eng., who highlighted the 12-year journey of the ICISS conference and its continuous evolution. He emphasized that "AI is no longer a futuristic concept, but a real force that is shaping society," said Prof. Suhono.

"Indonesia is not just a passive observer; we are an active participant in the global transformation," said Prof. Suhono. He also mentioned Indonesia's active involvement in international forums like the G20 and the ongoing development of a national AI roadmap, demonstrating the nation's strong commitment to harnessing the power of AI.

Subsequent remarks were delivered by the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at ITB, Prof. Ir. Lavi Rizki Zuhal, Ph.D., who represented the Rector of ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T. In his message, Prof. Lavi affirmed that the conference theme is highly relevant amidst the rapid digital transformation.

"ICISS 2025 serves as a strategic platform for leaders, researchers, policymakers, and industry practitioners to exchange knowledge," he stated. He added that ITB has a strong commitment to fostering collaboration between universities, industry, and government, as well as empowering young researchers to gain international exposure while showcasing Indonesia's contributions on the global research stage.

Throughout the first day, participants were treated to a variety of in-depth panel sessions. Experts from renowned institutions such as Harvard University, Tsinghua University, Kyushu Institute of Technology, and IEEE discussed crucial topics ranging from "AI Policy and Governance for National & International Perspective," "AI Research & Innovation Industry," "AI Ethics & Risk," "AI & Data Infrastructure," to "AI Investment and Business Development."

Also present as speakers were industry leaders from within the country, such as directors from PLN Icon Plus, Lintasarta, XLSMART, and LEN Industri, who shared their perspectives on the implementation of AI in their respective sectors.

The second day of the conference, Thursday (4/9/2025), was allocated for a special forum titled "AI for the Smart Indonesia Initiative (AIIF)." The forum, held in parallel at the West and East Halls of ITB, specifically discussed the practical application of AI in various strategic sectors to realize a Smart Indonesia.

Discussions covered a wide range of vital areas, including Smart Government, Smart & Sustainable Cities, Food Safety & Security, Smart Industry (Mining, oil and gas), Smart Mobility, Smart Finance, and Smart Healthcare and Environment, featuring dozens of speakers from ministries, state-owned enterprises, and leading private companies.

Overall, ICISS 2025 successfully bridged the gap between global insights and local applications, strengthening Indonesia's position as an active player in the global AI ecosystem and promoting cross-sector collaboration for a smarter and more inclusive technological future.
