BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Five students from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) who are members of the “BukitDuri Team” won first place in the “Oil Rig Design Competition (ORDC)” at the BOREYES International Energy Fair 2025. The team consists of Yesaya Anju Beckham Napitupulu, Farhan Yoga Widodo, Aryandha Dzaki Falah, Abdullah Azzam (Petroleum Engineering, 2022), and Muhammad Zaiq Azmi (Mechanical Engineering, 2022).

At the Southeast Asia-level competition hosted by SPE Universitas Padjajaran, themed “Future-Proof Rig Design for Sustainable Hydrocarbon Production”, the team responded to sustainable challenges in the energy sector by designing an oil rig that prioritized efficiency while paying attention to environmental aspects. By adopting the latest drilling technology along with adaptive design principles, their solution aims to support sustainable hydrocarbon production.

The team’s design is based on five core values: integrity, performance, resilience, innovation, and sustainability. Every detail, from structural components to material selection, was engineered to ensure long-term operational efficiency and durability.

Through enhanced drilling efficiency and advanced technology utilization, the BuktiDuri Team’s rig design is expected to increase the productivity of upstream oil and gas, while adding value to the national energy industry. This innovative approach also opens up opportunities to optimize Indonesia’s energy resources, especially in terms of sustainability and production efficiency

The BukitDuri Team’s success was the result of cross-disciplinary collaboration. Consisting of four Petroleum Engineering students and one Mechanical Engineering student, the team harmoniously combined their respective expertise. Petroleum Engineers members were responsible for field analysis, drill planning, and economic evaluation. While the mechanical engineering member focused on structural design and rig visualization. This multidisciplinary approach underscores the importance of integrating knowledge across fields to develop innovative and practical energy solutions.

The team’s main strategy included thorough planning, task distributions, and intensive communication. Adopting a “nothing to lose” they chose to give their best effort without being hindered by perfectionism. This mindset proves to be effective in improving the team’s performance amidst intense competition.

In addition to technical aspects, participation in the competition provided valuable lessons in time management, teamwork, and personal development.

Following their victory, Team BukitDuri is determined to continue innovating and contributing positively to the national and global oil and gas industry. They also hope to inspire fellow ITB students to pursue interdisciplinary collaboration and excel in international competitions.
