PROBOLINGGO, itb.ac.id – A team of lecturers and students from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) carried out a Community Service Program (Pengmas) in Wonotoro Village, Probolinggo Regency, from August 30 to September 1, 2025. The program, titled “Low Carbon Tourism: Developing a Low-Carbon Tourism Concept in the Mount Bromo Area” aims to promote sustainable tourism village development while supporting climate change mitigation efforts through the implementation of low-carbon tourism practices.
Wonotoro Village serves as one of the main gateways to the Mount Bromo tourist area. Its strategic location makes it an important buffer village for tourism activities, while also presenting challenges in maintaining environmental sustainability amid increasing visitor numbers. This potential formed the basis for selecting the village as the program’s location, aligning with ITB’s efforts to promote a sustainable low-carbon tourism concept.
The program was led by Dr. Susanna, S.Si., M.T. (Research Group on Environmental and Applied Oceanography), with team members Dr. Andri Hernandi (Spatial System and Cadastre Research Group) and Dr. Iwan Pramesti Anwar, S.Si., M.Si. (Environmental and Applied Oceanography Research Group). The activity also involved students from the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Technology (FITB) as part of project-based learning and multidisciplinary collaboration.
The series of activities began with a preliminary survey on May 30, 2025, to map potential locations for instrument installation, including tree planting areas, fog harvesting tools, solar-powered lamps, charging stations, and waste management facilities. Based on the survey results, the Wonotoro Village Head Office was designated as the main installation site.

During the main implementation phase, the team conducted inspections and installed environmentally friendly facilities. The activities continued with the planting of 100 trees, involving local residents as a symbol of commitment to reforestation and the promotion of low-carbon tourism. The program concluded with the inauguration of several facilities, including solar-powered lamps, solar charging stations, and fog harvesting devices, which are expected to support the community’s efforts in maintaining energy and environmental sustainability.
The Wonotoro Village Government expressed full support for the initiative. The Village Head extended his appreciation for ITB’s contribution to local tourism development.
“These facilities have been very helpful for us, and we hope they will continue to benefit the Wonotoro Tourism Village,” he said.
In addition to the support from the village government, the program also received logistical and field support from Hotel Jiwa Jawa Bromo, which shares ITB’s commitment to advancing sustainable tourism in the Tengger region. This collaboration with the private sector further enhances the synergy between academia, local communities, and tourism stakeholders in realizing the concept of low-carbon tourism.

Through this program, the team hopes that Wonotoro Village can become a model for practical low-carbon tourism implementation, while also raising community awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism. Collaboration among academics, local government, and the community is expected to serve as a long-term foundation for building a greener and more carbon-friendly environment.
