LEEUWARDEN, itb.ac.id – A Hackathon team from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) along with a lecturer from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering (FCEE) participated in the 2025 International Water Association (IWA) Resource Recovery. This event was held in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, from Monday-Friday (19-23/5/2025). Besides attending the conference, the ITB team established a strategic collaboration with Deltares, a world-class research institute in water management and coastal areas based in Delft, Netherlands.
The 2025 IWA Resource Recovery conference brought together scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and young professionals from various countries to drive the transformation of water management systems towards a circular economy concept. At this forum, the ITB Hackathon Team, consisting of Rifaldi Aji, Lia Dahlia (Master’s alumna in Water Resources Management), Raihan Firdaus (Bachelor’s alumnus in Urban and Regional Planning Bachelor), accompanied by Dr. Faizal Immaddudin Wira Rohmat, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., presented a poster titled “Enhancing Sustainable Water Supply in Ibu Kota Nusantara Through Innovative Sustainable Urban Drainage System (ٳ)”.

The concept emphasized the importance of adaptive and sustainable urban water infrastructure in the context of developing Nusantara Capital City (IKN). This participation demonstrated the active contribution of Indonesian youth in global discourse related to water resilience and environmental innovation.
In addition to attending the conference, the ITB team received a special invitation to visit Deltares. They held direct discussions with Deltares experts, including Tjitte Nauta, Prof. Eelco van Beek, Bob van Rongen, Dr. Jan Verkade, Dr. Lorinc Meszaros, and Isten Tamba. The discussions focused on the role of water resource technology in supporting the Dutch economy and how Deltares assists the Dutch government in predicting extreme events using forecast data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)
The visit concluded with an exploration of Deltares’ hydrodynamic laboratory, which serves as a simulation hub for various scenarios such as flooding, saltwater intrusion, and the impacts of climate change on lowland areas. The experience illustrated the importance of scientific modeling in supporting data-driven decision-making for future water infrastructure.
ITB’s participation in this event strengthened its international network and opened up opportunities for long-term collaboration with Deltares in the fields of water resilience, climate change, and the circular economy.
ITB has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Deltares, and this collaboration is expected to evolve into strategic services such as the provision of numerical simulations and physical models for water resource infrastructure in Indonesia. Other than that, ITB can leverage ECMWF forecast data to support the development of a national hydrometeorological disaster prediction system. This activity marks a strategic step for ITB in reinforcing the role of academia in science and technology-based water resource governance.
