ITB Receives Visit from Leiden University to Strengthen Multidisciplinary Collaboration

BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The Rector of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., received a visit from Leiden University on Thursday, June 5th, 2025. The meeting took place in the VIP Room of the ITB Rectorate Building. The visit aimed to further discuss the previously established collaboration agenda between ITB and Leiden University.

This meeting was attended by ITB leadership, including the Vice Rector for Academics and Student Affairs, Prof. Dr. Irwan Meilano, S.T., M.Sc., Vice Rector for Communication, Partnership, Alumni, and Administration, Dr. Andryanto Rikrik Kusmara, M.Sn; along with several deans of faculties and schools, including Dr. Ir. Tutun Juhana, S.T., M.T. (SEEI), Aep Patah, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D. (FMNS); Dr. Indra Wibowo, S.Si., M. Sc. (SLST); Prof. Ir. Tirto Prakoso, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D. (FIT); Dr. Eng. Nita Yuanita, S.T., M.T. (FCEE); as well as other ITB leadership representative.

Meanwhile, representatives from Leiden University who attended included Prof. mr. Annetje Ottow, President of the Executive Board; Prof. dr. Jasper Knoester, Dean of Faculty of Science; Prof. dr. Erik Danen, Dean Graduate School of Science; Prof. dr. Gianne Derks, Scientific Director Mathematical Institute; Prof. dr. Marcello Bonsangue, Scientific Director of Advanced Computer Science; Prof. dr. Fons Verbeek, Professor of Computational Bio-imaging; Prof. dr. Arnold Tukker, Professor of Industrial Ecology; Yun Tian, Policy Officer Global Engagement; and Prof. dr. Wim van den Doel, Dean Leiden-Delft-Erasmus. This visit was also attended by Marrik Bellen, Director of Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde (KITLV), and representatives from the Leiden University Office in Indonesia.

The Leiden University visit to ITB followed up on previously initiated collaboration. This follow-up visit aimed to discuss opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration in various fields, including biodiversity, environmental sustainability, quantum physics, astronomy, as well as artificial intelligence (AI).

The scope of the cooperation includes student exchange, summer school, international undergraduate program (IUP), international master program (IMP), joint research program, and matchmaking expertise session.

One of the key topics discussed was the potential for co-supervisory PhD programs. This initiative aligns with the strategic goals of Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology to accelerate the fulfillment of the need for lecturers with doctoral degrees in Indonesia.

“We are ready to establish co-supervisory collaborations in support of Indonesia’s Doctoral Lecturer Fulfillment Acceleration Program,” said Prof. Tata.

Furthermore, Prof. Tatacipta emphasized that this collaboration is in line with ITB’s vision to become a higher education institution that delivers tangible contributions not only to Indonesia but also at a global level.

“This collaboration with Leiden University demonstrates ITB’s concrete commitment to providing scientific solutions for global challenges. We believe this collaboration will expand ITB’s scientific impact not only locally, but also on an international scale,” he added.

This sentiment was positively received by the President of Leiden University’s Executive Board: “We are highly interested in strengthening this collaboration and are prepared to follow up on these discussions soon,” stated Prof. Annetje.

In addition to expanding international networks, this collaboration is expected to generate tangible impacts that benefit not only the academic communities of both institutions but also the broader public through contributions in science and technology.
