BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – The Rector of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., was one of the speakers at The 16th ASEAN University Network (AUN) Rectors’ Meeting and the 40th AUN Board of Trustees Meeting, held in the Philippines on July 24–25, 2025.
In his speech, Prof. Tata highlighted the importance of university transformation in addressing global challenges. According to him, universities today are no longer merely one-way learning institutions, but must serve as global innovation hubs and enablers of cross-disciplinary collaboration.
"Students need to be equipped with lifelong learning skills, critical thinking, ethics, and collaborative competencies, including the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI)," he stated.
He further explained that ITB has begun transforming into a fourth-generation university, integrating education, research, community service, entrepreneurship, and multidisciplinary innovation. ITB has also removed barriers between academic programs and degree levels to enable more flexible and collaborative learning.
In addition, he raised the issue of brain drain and stressed the importance of brain recirculation within the ASEAN region. Prof. Tata advocated for schemes that allow overseas talents to continue contributing, either through flexible return pathways or through network-based collaborations.
As concrete examples of contribution, ITB has developed environmentally friendly fuel catalysts such as green diesel and bio-octane, as well as online platforms that facilitate remote community service across various villages in Indonesia.
For context, the ASEAN University Network (AUN) is a consortium of 30 leading universities from ASEAN countries, established in 1995 to strengthen regional solidarity, education quality, and academic mobility. AUN focuses on cross-border academic collaboration, quality assurance, and joint innovation, and has become a strategic platform for building ASEAN higher education identity at both regional and global levels.
"Global challenges such as climate change, technological disruption, and social inequality can only be addressed through collaboration across sectors, disciplines, and nations," he said.
He expressed hope that collaboration among AUN member universities would continue to strengthen, fostering knowledge exchange and sustainable innovation throughout the region.
