BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in collaboration with the Indonesia Jazz and Blues Club presented Jazz Hall Barat #8 with the theme "Jazz Innovations", on Saturday (15/2/2025) at ITB Ganesha Campus.
This year's event features talented young jazz musician Ardhito Pramono, who is known for his musical style that blends swing jazz, bossa nova, pop, and indie genres. The Acting Governor of West Java, Bey Machmudin, and the elected Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, also attended the event.
This year, the Jazz Hall West showcased the concept of innovation in music that is not just an avant-garde exploration, but emphasizes new ideas in creative production.
"We want to feature music that is not only a product, but also a creative process that brings innovative values," said the Jazz Curator of the West Hall, Imelda Rosalin.
This concert features more than 20 songs with a variety of unique musical characters. ITB students, who are members of ITBJazz, Apres, and Undergraduates Choir (PSM), opened the event with a youthful spirit and creativity typical of Gen Z. Next, ITB Jazzification, an ITB alumni vocal group led by Toni P. Sianipar, performed an arrangement of popular songs and Brazilian jazz with a distinctive ITB touch.
The Rector of ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., positively appreciated the return of the West Hall Jazz event. "This event is not just a music concert, but a celebration of innovation, creativity, and art appreciation that has been part of ITB's tradition for a long time," he said.
He said ITB is also committed to becoming a forum for artists as well as musicians of various generations to share experiences and inspire one another.
As part of the event, there was an awarding of the Jazz Hall Barat Award 2025, which was awarded to MS Hidayat, a philanthropist who contributed to the development of jazz in Indonesia, and Oele Pattiselanno, a senior guitarist who has contributed diversely to the history of jazz in the country.
In the special segment, Oele Pattiselanno performed a duet with his student, Tiyo Alibasjah, backed by the trio Imelda Rosalin (piano), Ezra Manuhutu (contrabass), and Augustinus (drums). This concert also featured Nenden Shintawati, a blind vocalist who has had a successful career in the jazz world with the support of MS Hidayat.
Jazz Hall Barat itself has become an annual agenda since 2013 that was first initiated by the late Riza Arshad. This event is not only a forum for performances, but also a forum for discussion and innovation in the world of jazz music in Indonesia. After being paused in 2020 due to the pandemic, JAB is back with a new spirit, maintaining the mission of introducing jazz to the wider community.
The event was also a momentum for the soft launching of ITB's "Art Market", which is a cultural arts festival that has become an icon of the city of Bandung since 1972.
The Acting Governor of West Java, Bey Machmudin, hopes that the ITB Art Market can play a role in strengthening the creative economy industry ecosystem in the region.
He emphasized that the ITB Art Market is not only a celebration of art and music, but also a form of collective commitment in building a creative industry ecosystem, especially in Bandung which has been recognized as a "UNESCO Creative City".
"Bandung and West Java are centers of innovation and culture in Indonesia. Since the time of Bandung Lautan Api, the spirit of collaboration between academics, artists, and the community has produced various monumental works," he stated.
For an additional information, the "Synesthesia" of the ITB Art Market Pre-Event is set to begin in April 2025. This year, the ITB Art Market is back with a new spirit, bringing innovation and wider collaboration.
