JAKARTA, itb.ac.id – The School of Life Sciences and Technology, Bandung Institute of Technology (SITH ITB) signed a cooperation agreement with the Forestry and Other Land Use-Norway Contribution (FOLU-NC) at the Office of the Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia, Jakarta, Tuesday (15/4/2025). The signing was carried out by the Dean of SITH ITB, Prof. Endah Sulistyawati, Ph.D., and the Project Director of FOLU Net Sink 2030 RBC Norway Phase II and III, Dr. Edi Sulistyo Heri Susetyo.

This collaboration includes the Community-Based Ecosystem Restoration program in the Special Purpose Forest Area (KHDTK) of Mount Geulis ITB, carried out with the Altingia Fragrans Forest Foundation (AF3) and supported through Norway's Result-Based Contribution (RBC) funding. Referring to the Decree of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Forestry Number 1 of 2025, SITH ITB was appointed as an implementing partner in the implementation of FOLU Net Sink for the third program, namely Biodiversity Conservation.

Moreover, the implementation of the activity will be carried out by the KHDTK Management Team of Gunung Geulis ITB, with Dr. Ir. Endang Hernawan, M.T. as the leader.

According to Dr. Endang, the scope of the activity includes: 1) Contribution to the achievement of the target area of the FOLU Net Sink 2030 target area in West Java Province for reducing the rate of deforestation of mineral land, increasing carbon stocks without rotation, and protecting High Conservation Areas in West Java Province; 2) Contribution to the implementation of mitigation actions to prevent Natural Forest Degradation; 3) Support for one of the mitigation actions to increase carbon stocks through planting non-rotational-harvested-timbers trees.
"This activity is mainly carried out in areas with the focus of forest areas optimization for land protection," he said.

Dr. Endang hopes that this collaboration can become ITB's contribution in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. "With the establishment of SITH ITB with the locus of activities at the ITB Education Forest KHDTK in implementing the FOLU Net Sink 2030, it is a form of ITB's contribution in participating in mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through the application of technology and the use of human resources, both lecturers and students, in controlling climate change," he said.

FOLU-NC is a joint commitment to meet the Enhanced National Determined Contribution (Enhanced NDC) target for the implementation of FOLU Net Sink 2030 with the support of the cooperation funds of the Republic of Indonesia and the Kingdom of Norway. Meanwhile, the FOLU Net Sink 2030 Program is an initiative of the Government of Indonesia to ensure that the forestry sector and other land uses in Indonesia are able to absorb more carbon emissions than those that are released, with a target of reducing national greenhouse gas emissions by 140 million tons of CO2eq by 2030.

Besides ITB, there are several other universities that receive similar funding such as UNPAD, IPB, and UGM.
