BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - In order to prepare competent future mining graduates, the ITB Mining Engineering Study Program collaborated with the Australian mining planning technology and consulting company, Deswik Mining Consultants Pty Ltd, located at Edward Street, Brisbane QLD 4000, Australia, to hold a guest lecture and mining software training on September 26-27, 2025, at ITB Ganesha. This event was specifically aimed at ITB Mining Engineering students in preparation for the Open Pit Mine Planning course.

The activity, part of an ongoing academic partnership between the ITB Mining Engineering study program and Deswik, was coordinated by Dr. Eng. Tri Karian, S.T, M.T. as a lecturer and Muhammad Luthfi Idhar Muharom as a student representative. According to Luthfi, this training is of very high urgency.

"Industry demand is currently quite high, and users expect competent employees, so an agenda like this is very helpful for students, especially in preparing for the practical needs of the mining industry," said Luthfi.

This training and guest lecture was delivered directly by Deswik's Senior Mining Consultant, Yulius Shoid, who is also an ITB alumnus. "It was a privilege to return to my alma mater, ITB, to deliver a guest lecture and Deswik training to final-year Mining Engineering students," he stated.

Luthfi noted that the event's atmosphere was very interactive with high enthusiasm from the participants. "The activity was very interactive, with many students actively asking questions, on both basic and advanced topics," he said. He added that the facilitator team also actively assisted the participants to ensure a smooth learning process.

The main material presented by Yulius Shoid carried the grand theme of "Integrated Mine Planning," which Luthfi considered very powerful. "The learning begins with recognizing and understanding the block geomodel all the way to the optimization and pit design process, which will allow students to become acquainted and familiar with the hierarchical process in mine planning," he explained.

As part of its support for education, Deswik provided access to 25 software licenses to support the students' academic activities. This benefit is considered immense, not only for course assignments but also for final thesis and Capstone Projects.

"The powerful tools that Deswik has are very helpful for students," said Luthfi. "If I may say so, Deswik is a 'Palu Gada' (do-it-all) tool—it can handle everything from geomodel to scheduling, for both open pit and underground mining."

Luthfi hopes that collaborative activities like this will continue and not be just an incidental agenda. "The hope for Deswik is that they can make this a routine agenda, maybe every 6 months or perhaps annually, so that the activity is sustainable for future batches of students," he concluded, while also expressing his gratitude to Deswik and for the participants' enthusiasm.

In closing, Yulius Shoid expressed his gratitude to ITB for this opportunity. "Special thanks to ITB for welcoming Deswik back on campus and for allowing us to share this experience. We look forward to seeing how these future engineers apply what they've learned," he concluded.
