BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Soemardja Gallery, at the Faculty of Art and Design (FSRD) ITB, became a space for cross-cultural dialogue through a group exhibition titled "Re-aksi". Held from September 8-13, 2025, the exhibition was the culmination of the Contemporary Artist in Residence and Research (CAIRR) 2025 program, an initiative that brought together artists from Indonesia, Japan, and Malaysia to create works in response to the environmental and social situation in Bandung.

The "Re-aksi" exhibition featured works from six artists: Budi Adi Nugroho, Darmawan Natsir, Fadli Mokhtar, Faizal Suhif, Hitoshi Kuriyama, and Kazutaka Shioi. According to Dr. Budi Adi Nugroho, S.Sn., M.Sn., an FSRD ITB lecturer and the program's initiator, the exhibition's title reflects the artists' process of reacting to their experiences while living in residence in Bandung.

The primary goal of the CAIRR program is to give FSRD ITB students direct exposure to the creative process of professional international artists. "When students can witness the creative process of an artist and get to know a more diverse range of artists from abroad, that is the main objective of this program," explained Budi.

The exhibited works were born from the artists' intense interactions with the city of Bandung. Malaysian artists Fadli Mokhtar and Faizal Suhif arrived in Bandung just as a demonstration was taking place in the city. They channeled this experience into an installation piece using found objects from the protest site, which were then painted red and white as a symbol of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Japanese artist Hitoshi Kuriyama was fascinated by the folklore and shape of Mount Tangkuban Parahu. He created a hanging installation from bronze, its color achieved through oxidation after being submerged in the Kawah Domas crater. His colleague, Kazutaka Shioi, experienced culture shock with the complexity of Bandung's urban planning and its waste problems, which he then translated into a work of art.

The Indonesian artists also reacted to the current situation. Budi Adi Nugroho presented a piece inspired by a burned billboard from the demonstration, which he linked to the issue of capitalism behind global geopolitical conflicts. Darmawan Natsir displayed a blurred work, representing the uncertainty of the current socio-political conditions.

More than just an exhibition, the CAIRR program became a living laboratory for FSRD students. They were directly involved in various activities, from workshops to serving as assistants who accompanied the artists. "They see everything from the beginning, from when the artist arrives, is confused, to being stressed. They know the whole process," said Budi, emphasizing the importance of this authentic experience for the students' education.

Through "Re-aksi", FSRD ITB has not only successfully created a contemporary art exhibition relevant to current issues but has also built an innovative educational platform that brings students in particular, and the general public, closer to the reality of the artistic profession on the world stage.
