BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Presidential Special Staff for Creative Economy, Yovie Widianto, was a guest speaker at ITB Studium Generale at the West Hall, ITB Ganesha Campus, on Wednesday (24/9/2025). On this occasion, he presented the topic “Creative Industry and Digital Policy”.

In his speech, the ITB Rector highlighted the significance of Yovie Widianto’s presence for the academic community. "The creative industry contributes to the national economy. Behind it are various aspects of technology that support it. Mr. Yovie's presence is expected to inspire the emergence of creative economic actors from ITB," said Prof. Tata.

Yovie Widianto opened the Studium Generale by emphasizing Bandung’s conducive environment for the growth of art and creativity. He recounted his career journey from introducing jazz music in Indonesia to winning the Best Composition Award in Taipei at the age of 21. Although his early achievements were little known in Indonesia, he remained committed to pursuing music. “At first, my work was considered too complicated, but through exploration and adaptation, I found a melodic format that was acceptable, still technical, but with an Indonesian nuance,” he explained.

Yovie also emphasized the importance of striking a balance between artistic idealism and public acceptance. He reminded us that the quality of work is the main factor, not just chasing trends or virality. As a practitioner with over four decades of experience, Yovie shared his views on the digital era, which is marked by both challenges and opportunities. According to him, technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), can help the creative process, but it cannot replace the role of the human heart.

He also touched on the issue of copyright and royalties, which has become a major national discussion. For him, appropriate regulations will support the growth and development of the creative industry while still protecting small communities. “Regarding royalties, I believe they are important to protect works. But I also want the system to be fair, not burdensome for MSMEs or small communities. Music should be enjoyed by everyone, while also providing space for artists to grow,” he said.

Closing his session, Yovie advised ITB students to continue to dare to dream, create, and contribute to the nation. “Live your life with your dreams and passions. Don't give up easily, don't be distracted by small things that hinder your focus. Keep moving forward for Indonesia,” he concluded.
