AKMEL Team wins 2nd runner-up at POISE UGM 2024.
BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - Three students from Chemical Engineering of Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) made a proud achievement at the national level at Process Engineering Series of Events (POISE) UGM 2024. Consisting of Oswin Limantara, Arman Duwiwijaya, and Afnes Fisnanda (Chemical Engineering, Class of 2022), they successfully secured the 2nd runner-up position as the AKMEL Team. This competition was organized by Universitas Gadjah Mada on November 9–10, 2024.
Themed "Empowering Industry Innovation: Cultivating Sustainable Future for the Green Industry," POISE UGM 2024 was a chemical engineering competition featuring three categories: Safety Competition, Paper and Poster Competition, and Business Case Competition.
Competing in the second category, the AKMEL Team arranged a scientific paper and poster about predetermined chemical engineering topics.

"Our main topic was waste treatment, with the title 'Utilization of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) and Sewage Sludge Mixture Into Biomethane Through Anaerobic Co-Digestion as an Alternative Fuel to Coal in Boilers.' Uniquely, besides writing a scientific paper, we also had to create a poster," shared Arman.
The team highlighted that competitions focused on chemical engineering were a rare opportunity, making this experience especially valuable for them.
"POISE UGM 2024 provided us with the platform to compete with fellow chemical engineering students and to gain experience beyond campus, including in public speaking and research," said Oswin.
The AKMEL Team's road to success was far from easy, as they had to deal with team formation, topic discussion, abstract arrangement, full paper submission, and a presentation in the grand finals.
"The most challenging part was topic selection, as we had to pick one that was both unique and aligned with our studies. Fortunately, one of our members takes the bioprocess specialization in the ITB Chemical Engineering Study Program, so we decided to present that topic," stated Afnes.
They revealed that they always worked together to ensure tactical and effective coordination. Upon being announced as grand finalists, the team immediately began preparing their presentation, balancing it alongside practicums, major assignments, and exams.
Furthermore, the AKMEL Team credited their victory to strong teamwork and collaboration with all parties involved. According to them, consultations with their advisor provided valuable inputs and suggestions for further improvement. They also emphasized the importance of proofreading to review their scientific paper.
"Never procrastinate, and pay special attention to technical aspects. We always made sure that our data could be justified, and to support this, we used reference managers such as Mendeley and Zotero to save time in compiling the bibliography," shared Arman.
They hope their success will serve as a stepping stone for future achievements. In closing, the team encouraged fellow students to bravely seize every opportunity, as it might only come once in a lifetime and never return.
