BANDUNG, itb.ac.id – Two faculty members from the Architecture Program at the School of Architecture, Planning, and Policy Development (SAPPK) ITB, Widiyani, S.T., M.T., Ph.D. and Dr. Ir. Christina Gantini, M.T., have been selected as recipients of the 2025 Australia Awards Fellowship (AAF), funded by the Australian Government's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). During their one-month program at the University of Melbourne, they explored the theme of Walkable Placemaking through a series of lectures, discussions with local leader champions, placemaking communities, and forums with city councils in both Sydney and Melbourne.

One of the key activities of the fellowship was developing a street design proposal for a section of Melbourne and presenting it to the local community. This experience broadened their understanding of planning inclusive, connected, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure—an approach highly relevant to urban environments in Indonesia.

As lecturers for the Placemaking and Social Experimentation courses, both faculty members have guided students in real-world projects throughout Bandung City and the ITB campus using placemaking approaches. Since the course was launched, dozens of tactical projects have been carried out by students from various departments. Currently, they are working to establish ITB as a living laboratory for social innovation and public space development within the context of their teaching.

Prior to their departure for Australia, together with Kukuh Rizki Satriaji, S.Ds., M.T., a lecturer from the Interior Design Program, they initiated a campaign called “StepStrong” in May 2025. This is a weekly walking movement on the ITB campus aimed at raising awareness about the importance of walking, strengthening campus community bonds, and reducing motor vehicle use within campus grounds. The campaign is open to students, faculty, staff, and researchers. Participants are challenged to walk at least 7 kilometers per week, with opportunities to win exciting prizes.

Upon returning from Melbourne, the lecturers are committed to strengthening the StepStrong initiative and applying new insights to help transform ITB into a greener, more walkable, and community-oriented campus.
