BANDUNG, itb.ac.id - The "Regenerative Cities" webinar held by the Directorate of Sustainable Professional Education (Dirdikpro) ITB, Monday (10/3/2025), became a forum for discussion on the concept of a sustainable city that is also able to regenerate its environment.
The event featured experts from various disciplines, including Prof. Jago Dodson, Director of the Urban Futures Enabling Impact Platform (RMIT), Prof. Andrew Butt from the field of Sustainability & Urban Planning (RMIT), Prof. Ridwan Sutriadi from the School of Architecture, Planning & Policy Development (SAPPK ITB), Dr. Dwinita Larasati from the Faculty of Art & Design (FSRD ITB), and Ts.Dr. R. Aswin Rahadi from the School of Business & Management (SBM ITB).
In this webinar, the speakers revealed the concept of regenerative cities, different from the sustainable city model that has been widely applied. Regenerative cities not only focus on reducing environmental impact, but also aim to improve ecosystems that have been degraded. As Prof. Jago Dodson said, "Regenerative cities must be able to restore natural resources that have been used, not just maintain balance."

Prof. Andrew Butt mentioned that the ideal city should be designed with a holistic approach, integrating the ecological, social, and economic aspects. He emphasized the importance of technological innovation in resource management, such as the use of renewable energy and a more efficient transportation system.
On the other hand, Dr. Dwinita Larasati discussed the role of design in shaping a more inclusive urban environment and paying attention to the needs of local communities. He explained that art and culture can be a catalyst in creating a more lively and dynamic public space.
Meanwhile, Prof. Ridwan Sutriadi underlined the importance of adaptive and data-driven urban planning to respond to the challenges of climate change and population growth. He explained that urban regeneration is not only related to green infrastructure, but also to community involvement in decision-making. Ts.Dr. R. Aswin Rahadi from SBM ITB also discussed how business strategies and economic policies can play a role in supporting the development of regenerative cities, especially through circular economy models that encourage efficiency and innovation in the use of resources.
This webinar is proof that the concept of regenerative cities is not just a discourse, but an urgent need in the midst of a global environmental crisis. The discussions that took place showed that cross-disciplinary collaboration and the use of cutting-edge technology are the key to realizing a city that is not only surviving, but also able to provide a better life for its residents.
